Comparative Measurements of Near-Eye Displays Using a Goniophotometer and an Imaging Light Measuring Device

2025/08/14
How can manufacturers ensure both accuracy and efficiency when testing near-eye displays (NEDs) for AR and VR devices? A new study published on Wiley Online Library by Instrument Systems answers this key question.
The research compares two advanced measurement systems:
- DMS Goniophotometer – providing unmatched precision in laboratory R&D
- LumiTop 5300 AR/VR Imaging Light Measurement Device – delivering fast and reliable results for production testing.
For the evaluation, a pancake-optics LCD NED (FOV 90°) was selected as the device under test (DUT). Both systems measured white, red, green, and blue patterns and demonstrated excellent agreement, with deviations consistently minimal (mean Δu’v’ < 0.003). This proves that ILMD results are comparable to the goniophotometer reference.
The findings highlight that manufacturers no longer need to choose between accuracy and speed: the DMS is the ultimate tool for detailed optical analysis, while the LumiTop system enables rapid testing of fully assembled XR devices. Together, they form a powerful toolkit for advancing next-generation immersive displays.
