Color accuracy remains a key challenge for waveguide-based augmented reality (AR) systems. While diffractive waveguides enable compact, glasses-like designs, they introduce complex spectral and angular transmission effects that directly impact perceived color fidelity.
In this presentation, we reveal how AR waveguides act as angle-dependent spectral filters rather than neutral optical elements. Using calibrated spectral and luminance measurements, we demonstrate pronounced wavelength- and angle-dependent color shifts, particularly affecting blue and green components. Our results highlight the critical role of waveguide optics in AR color performance and emphasize the need for advanced spectral characterization and compensation strategies to achieve consistent, high-quality visual experiences in next-generation AR devices.
