Spatially-resolved polarization characterization of VCSEL-Arrays

Although VCSELs are intrinsically single-longitudinal mode devices, they usually show complex polarization characteristics. Most VCSEL are not designed to emit in a single polarization state. There is typically no control about the polarization angle. The light emitted by the VCSEL is typically linearly polarized along one of two orthogonal directions and abrupt polarization switching can be observed when temperature or bias current is changed. In this work we show a method of measuring spatially resolved polarization characteristics of VCSELs. This is achieved using a combination of polarization filtered microscope optics and a CMOS camera.

Sharpness and Contrast of AR/VR Near-Eye Displays: Goniometric vs. Advanced 2D Imaging Light Measurements of the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF)

Sharpness and contrast of near-eye displays are essential parameters for the quality control of AR/VR/MR near-eye displays. Clear and immersive perception of the augmented or virtual reality requires optimal optical differentiation between different display contents. Typically, the modulation transfer function (MTF) acts a measure for sharpness and contrast. We propose two approaches to cover the complementary testing needs from lab to production: Goniometric MTF measurements, sampling a comparatively small field of view (FOV) at high angular resolution and fast camera solutions with a large FOV to cover the entire near-eye display in one shot. In this paper we present a comparison of the two approaches and evaluate the correlation between the two measurement approaches. We make use of that correlation to extend the high angular resolution of the goniometric approach to a fast and accurate 2D MTF measurement tailored for production takt times.

Very small µLED displays provide unique challenges for pixel correction processes due to their narrow bandwidth emission and pixel size in the µm range. The LumiTop 4000 with magnifying lens is ideally suited for this application with its spectral reference measurement and 2x magnifying lens.

For efficient testing of thousands of μLEDs on a wafer, the test procedure must be parallelized. The manufacturer is thus required to simultaneously contact as many μLEDs as possible. In addition, the optical inspection should be fast and accurate, and performed synchronous to the production flow. This functions only with a 2D measurement using specifically calibrated instruments to prevent measurement errors.

The rise of VCSEL arrays imposes new challenges on its characterization. Especially, spatial measurements in the near and far field of a VCSEL array are required. Camera-based imaging systems and conoscopes are suitable for production testing of spatial VCSEL characteristics. In-line testing of VCSELs with nanosecond pulses will become more and more relevant with their increasing spread in time-of-flight applications.
