With the publication of Technical Report CIE 250:2022 Spectroradiometric Measurements of Optical Radiation Sources, the CIE has issued a contemporary document on the fundamentals of spectroradiometry, thereby discharging its predecessor CIE 063:1984 into well-earned retirement after 38 years of effective service.

The rapidly emerging dominance of OLED technology for illumination and display applications is driving demand for a metrology tailored to these light sources.

The authors summarize a UV-LED calibration concept that relies upon radiant flux, and emphasize the advantages for developing measurement standards in the increasingly important UV spectral range. The extremely low measurement uncertainties (k=2) of the UV-ACS are comparably low to those in the metrologically unproblematic visible range, thereby offering a reliable resource for radiant flux calibration in the UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C ranges.

In the mass production of laser diodes such as VCSEL, high-resolution array spectroradiometers are an efficient alternative for in-process inspection in a 24/7 production environment. Compared to established measurement techniques, they also guarantee high throughput volumes and reliability in the industrial environment: their configuration means high mechanical stability and enables integration times in the order of just a few milliseconds for CCD and microseconds for CMOS detectors.

The transition from incandescent light bulbs to (O)LEDs as dominant lighting sources poses new challenges to light measurement. (O)LEDs exhibit completely different and far greater variations in their spectral distribution, for the measurement of which calibrations with standard illuminant A are not optimal.
